My lust maegt Laurae’s kat te roemen.

• In the Netherlands too the use of the title 'Sappho' to describe a woman with poetic aspirations quickly became a cliché.' The first was Anna Bijns, 'Sappho of Lesbos, in Germanic verse" - otherwise known as the 'Sappho of Antwerp' - and for women poets in the 17th and 18th centuries it was the rule rather than the exception to be styled Sappho. The hackneyed nature of the comparison was recognised as early as the 18th century, as is shown in the ode 'Op de kat van Laura' ('In praise of Laura's cat') by Hubert Gregorius van Vryhoff. In this poem he makes fun of stereotypical odes in praise of women, as well as of the obligatory comparison with Sappho. 'My lust maegt Laurae's kat te roemen' (I de-sire to praise maid Laura's cat) begins the poem. It is 'Een kat, die Poëzy verstaet' (a cat that understands poetry) and which is therefore 'de Saffo van haar tydt' (the Sappho of her time). Yet throughout the whole of the 18th century women writers continued to be given the epithet of Sappho, such as our 'Beemster Sappho', the famous novelist Betje Wolff.
